“Sometimes things aren’t that easy, alright?” she turned around, a slight edge to her words as she pulled down one of the wine glasses.

“And sometimes they are,” he said softly, walking closer to her.  ”You know if you keep worrying this much, you’ll end up with wrinkles,” he teased softly.

“I never once said I wanted you to live your life scared,” she argued. “I want you to be careful.”

“I am careful, okay?  I always have been, but I’m not going to start looking over my shoulder at every turn.  It’s not who I am.”

Leigh sighed and got up, shaking her head, “Just nevermind, Matthew,” she said, moving off into the kitchen to get herself a glass of wine.

Matthew sighed as he pushed himself off the couch, rubbing his temples as he followed her into the kitchen, “Everything is going to be fine, okay?  You’re stuck with me until I’m old and wrinkled, yelling at whipper snappers to get off my damn lawn.”

“They have to talk first, I can shoot faster than they can talk.”

“They don’t always have to talk! They can do it non-verbally.”

“What do you want, Halleigh?  For me to hide away and stay nice and safe, never leaving the house?”

“I’m just scared, Matt, alright? Is that such a problem?”

“No, that’s not a problem.  The problem is that you won’t talk to me about it.  The problem is that you expect me to live my life scared and I won’t do that.  That just lets them win Hal.”

“I’m not saying that you are scared of them. I’m just telling you to be careful.”

“I’m always careful, it’s part of the job,” he told her, casually.

“Be extra careful,” she said stubbornly.

“I carry a gun, Hal.  I think I can handle myself,” he told her just as stubbornly.

“They could disarm you with a flick of their wrist when you’re least expecting it.”

“I don’t want to talk about it,” she said softly, “So please don’t make me.”

He opened his mouth to argue but eventually just closed his mouth with a sigh, “Fine.  We won’t talk about it if you don’t want too…”

“Thank you,” she wrote a few notes in the margins of her documents before she groaned and dropped her pen, leaning back against the couch. “Just be extra careful, alright?”

Matthew cocked an eyebrow at her, “You realize I’m not scared of someone just because they’re magical, right?”

“I’m not saying that you are scared of them. I’m just telling you to be careful.”
